EI weekly maximum to increase on January 1, 2015

The maximum insurable earnings for employment insurance (EI) is increasing from $48,600 per year to $49,500 effective January 1, 2015. This means that the weekly maximum EI benefit will increase to $524 – an increase of $10 per week.

If your Short Term Disability (STD) plan pays a percentage of salary up to the EI maximum or it pays a flat amount equal to the EI maximum, we will automatically update your plan to the new weekly maximum amount.

If your STD plan is registered with Canada’s EI Premium Reduction Program, it will continue to qualify for EI premium reductions.

If these changes affect your plan, your January invoice will reflect the increased STD benefit amount. Your STD rate per $10 will not change because of the benefit change, but you will see a premium increase as a result of the increased benefit amount. For example:
STD Benefit
Amount
Rate per $10 of benefitMonthly Premium
Old weekly benefit amount - $514$1.50 1
(no change)
$77.10
2015 weekly benefit amount - $524$78.60

For more information on changes to EI benefits, please contact the EI Premium Reduction Program toll-free at 1 800-561-7923 or visit www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/cs/prp/010.shtml.

If you have any questions about your STD plan, please contact your plan advisor or your Pacific Blue Cross account executive.
