Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training helps participants to recognize and respond to employees who may be experiencing a decline in mental wellbeing, including crisis or emergency situations. Amongst local emergencies and the global COVID-19 pandemic, pro-actively dealing with mental health issues in the workplace has never been more important. Most mental illnesses are preventable, making MHFA training a smart investment in the health of your workforce and organization. Identifying mental health concerns early on and providing appropriate supports can have a positive impact on your absenteeism rates, presenteeism issues, and mental-health related benefits claims.

Claims

30% of all short-term and long-term disability claims are due to mental health problems and illnesses. 1

Cost

Organizations reported spending more than $10.5 million per year in absence claims.1

Stigma

500,000 Canadians miss work every week due to mental illness, yet 77% of workers don’t feel comfortable talking to their employers about it. 2

Pacific Blue Cross is the only Canadian insurance carrier that offers employers and unions training in Mental Health First Aid.

Stigma continues to be a real barrier to accessing help for a mental health concern, particularly at work. In a recent BC-wide survey, we learned that almost one third of British Columbians believe that workplaces have a biased view of people with a mental health condition, and 36% said they had personally experienced unfair treatment or marginalization because of it.

Mental Health First Aid training can begin to change this perspective within your organization. The program teaches participants how to recognize a change in an employee’s behaviour, engage them in a meaningful conversation about it, and provide guidance to appropriate resources and support.

Training focuses on the four most common mental health conditions—depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use issues—and touches on psychosis, gambling problems, and eating disorders. It can also help identify common workplace concerns related to declining mental wellbeing including burnout, disengagement, presenteeism, stress, and being overwhelmed.

Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate from Mental Health First Aid Canada. And, to help put the program into practice in your organization, our Health & Wellness team will provide follow-up support with an emphasis on promoting psychologically healthy and safe workplaces—and building a network of mental health first aiders.

A small investment of time and money can yield a powerful mental health service within your organization, which can help to reduce stigma, improve health, and create a more positive workplace culture. And it’s just one more demonstration of our pro-active and preventative efforts to tailor health and wellbeing solutions for plan sponsors and members.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based international program that is run in Canada by the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Pacific Blue Cross is the only health insurance carrier to offer this training to benefit plan sponsors and unions.

  2. How does this program help me deal with mental health issues in my workforce?

Those who complete the Mental Health First Aid training are more confident in addressing mental health issues as well as providing comfort to an impacted staff member. The program teaches participants how to recognize a change in employee behaviour, engage them in a meaningful conversation about it, and provide guidance to appropriate resources and support.

  3. What types of mental health concerns will participants be able to identify?

The program focuses on the four most common mental health conditions—depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use issues—and touches on psychosis, gambling problems, and eating disorders. It can also help identify common workplace concerns related to declining mental wellbeing including burnout, disengagement, presenteeism, stress, and being overwhelmed.

  4. How does the program reduce stigma around mental health issues?

Simply having the ability to recognize and assist impacted employees in a safe and discreet way is a big step forward. In addition, the Mental Health First Aid training has an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion integrated into its curriculum, which helps employers and unions destigmatize the need for mental health assistance.

  5. Am I obligated to provide mental health support in the workplace?

Employers are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of their workplace. Preventing mental health injury and working to reduce and address hazards that may impact mental wellbeing are also part of this important work. In addition, employers have a duty to accommodate for mental health illnesses and concerns, and employees should be protected from any related harassment or discrimination. The National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, notes Mental Health First Aid training as an action employers can take during implementation of the Standard to promote a healthy and safe workplace. All in all, Mental Health First Aid can help set your organization up for success!

  6. How effective is the training?

Mental Health First Aid has been proven to be effective in Canada, and the research mirrored findings from Australia and other international locations. It is also noted as a best practice by the Public Health Agency of Canada. Here is the evidence.

  7. Who should participate in this training program?

Anyone can attend the training, but it’s most relevant for those roles that are most likely going to have the conversations, such as front line managers, people leaders, supervisors, members of the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, union representatives, and other leadership roles within the organization. We can help you narrow this down for your organization if you’d prefer.

  8. How much does the program cost?

Employers and/or unions are charged a per participant fee for the training. Please talk to your Account Executive for further information or to arrange training for members of your workforce.

  9. What is the format of the training?

The Mental Health First Aid training is offered virtually and in-person, subject to COVID-19 public health and safety protocols.

  10. How long does the training program take?

The virtual program consists of a two-hour pre-work component and six hours of Zoom classroom time spread over two days, for a total of eight hours of learning. In-person training is a full 16 hours of classroom time over two days.

  11. How many people can be trained at once?

To ensure participants get a nice balance of peer discussion and facilitator time, we limit the virtual sessions to 15 people.

  12. Why should I do this training now?

Mental health issues, particularly depression and anxiety, have risen significantly since COVID-19 began and there’s a great deal of evidence to suggest that we are facing a long road ahead before we all get back to pre-pandemic normal.

  13. Why book this training through Pacific Blue Cross?

You know us. Our mission is to improve health and wellbeing for British Columbians, and we are always looking for ways we can tailor services to the BC marketplace.
