Students across British Columbia are taking part in important conversations about racism, allyship and inclusion through the Team Up to End Racism program, an initiative supported by Pacific Blue Cross and led by the BC Lions.
This year, the program visited 20 schools in 8 communities across the province, including Coquitlam, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, Prince George, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver and West Vancouver, reaching more than 5,600 students through interactive presentations focused on empathy, understanding and creating more inclusive school communities.
Creating space for important conversations
Led by BC Lions players and presenters, the sessions encouraged students to reflect on the impacts of racism, hear personal stories and explore practical ways to support others when they witness discrimination or exclusion.
“Creating healthier communities means helping people feel safe, respected and included,” said Sarah Hoffman, President and CEO of Pacific Blue Cross. “Programs like Team Up to End Racism create opportunities for young people to engage in meaningful conversations about empathy, allyship and belonging, and we’re proud to support the BC Lions in bringing these important conversations to communities across BC.”
The presentations combined storytelling, discussion and real-world examples to help make difficult conversations approachable and relatable for students.
Hearing directly from students and schools
Many participants shared that the sessions helped them think differently about how they can respond to racism in their schools and communities. One student reflected that the program reinforced the idea that “everyone can help with racism and that it takes a team to go against systematic racism,” while another shared that they would feel more confident speaking up, supporting others and reporting incidents to a trusted adult when safe to do so.
Educators also noted the impact the program had on students and the broader school environment. One participating school shared that the sessions encouraged students to “reflect, engage, and live out their faith through action,” while helping foster greater empathy, understanding and peace within the school community.
Expanding the program’s impact across B.C.
Originally launched through a collaboration between the BC Lions and community partners committed to advancing inclusion and belonging, Team Up to End Racism continues to expand its reach beyond school visits through awareness videos and social media content featuring BC Lions players speaking out against racism and promoting inclusion across B.C. communities.
“The BC Lions are proud to continue another year of the Team Up to End Racism program for schools across British Columbia,” the organization shared in its program highlights. “We believe in the power of diversity, and are committed to standing up against racism, and creating an even playing field for all students in our communities.”
At Pacific Blue Cross, we believe healthier communities are built when people feel they belong. By supporting programs that encourage understanding, empathy and inclusion, we can help create safer spaces for young people across B.C. to learn, grow and support one another.
