  • Your plan may only cover in-country (Out-of-Province) travel emergency expenses. Before leaving Canada, ensure Out-of-Country expenses are also covered.
  • Your plan may limit coverage to a specific number of days outside of province: Check to ensure your coverage protects you for the entire duration of your trip.
  • You have a lifetime limit on your plan that might be easily depleted by several nights in a foreign hospital. In many cases, your lifetime limit encompasses all expenses paid under your plan (i.e., drug costs, paramedical costs, etc). The way to determine if this is the case for you is to check the Out of Province Emergency coverage section in CARESnet. If there is no maximum indicated, all expenses from a travel emergency are charged against your overall lifetime limit (this amount is indicated in the Plan Amounts section of CARESnet).
  • You have a pre-existing medical condition: Any medical emergencies related to a pre-existing condition may not be covered.
  • If you are pregnant and plan to travel within 2 months of your expected delivery date, any expenses incurred related to therapeutic abortion, childbirth or complications of your pregnancy occurring are not covered.

Do you need additional travel coverage?

Most people, even those with Extended Health Care coverage, benefit from purchasing additional travel coverage so they are fully protected. However, it's always advisable to start by investigating the limits of your existing Extended Health Care plan. We've put together this comparison to help you understand the differences between out-of-country coverage in your group health plan vs. additional travel coverage available from Pacific Blue Cross.
